Shades of blue

Slim pickings at an Arlington jumble sale last week, but some nice things: a nice vintage paisley viscose/wool man’s scarf, plus a very thick cotton apron – from Kew Gardens: whether staff-issue or gift shop, I know not, but it has already proved to be useful. I have discovered, when doing my occasional casual stints for a friend’s catering company (subsidises my poorly-paid writing work, pays the university fees, keeps the boat afloat…) that wearing a Proper Apron gives a certain gravitas beyond kitchen grunt. They even let me prepare the canapes the other night. Also pictured: a work-issue blue overall top, for garden work, painting and decorating, unblocking drains, etc etc. Not a fashionable vintage French peasant smock or anything like that – this is work-wear for actually doing a job.
