Each year, I tend to buy a duffel coat, wear it for a bit, realise that it’s terribly unflattering, and pass it on – but I keep trying. I do think that this winter I may have cracked it: this dark grey one (£10 from the Brighton Marina car boot sale; of considerable vintage and made in New Zealand) is a good dark colour, a straight cut and surprisingly slimline in silhouette. It’s also pretty warm and waterproof. At last… And my other finds from last week, the first two addressing another question I’ve not quite answered in a while: that of the fuller skirt. First up, a white one (Kew) with gold stripes and a slightly Grecian/classical feel, £4 from Oxfam in Lewes; and from the reliably classy Martlets Hospice shop in Lewes High Street, a silky one (Monsoon, but not too twee) with net hem trim, £10 but absolutely new, rather evening-ish and very smart. Plus a couple of cheapies from a jumble sale in Nutley: striped purplish M&S jumper and a black Next long-sleeved T-shirt with deep V-neck and ribbon trim (20p each). A satisfactory week’s Usual Shopping to compensate for the recent cull.
