I’m not entirely immune to the lure of the January sales, but what invariably happens is this: I have a good look and poke-around in a few favourite stores, fail to see anything I really want or that I can justify spending money on, but buy something for the sake of it, invariably yet another stripey T-shirt or two which I don’t really need. In fact, I have bought stripey T-shirts in just about every sale since I was old enough to go shopping on my own. Because you can never have too many stripey tops. Anyway, I’ve saved myself a few quid this year by a. vowing not to buy any new clothes (except for downright essentials and intimates such as pants, socks, black leggings and tights, etc) in 2014 (not that this will be a hard resolution for me to keep, but anyway, it was in the spirit of the discussion at the time the vow was made) and b. picking up two striped tops, £1.50 each, from the Brighton Marina car boot sale. Navy and glittery green one was from French Connection, voluminous navy/white cowl-neck from H&M. And my other weakness: jumpers. I have worn and worn a green M&S one with cropped sleeves and wide shawl/polo-neck I picked up in Cooksbridge last spring, and now I have an identical one in black with coloured thread-effect (£2). The first boot fair finds of the year, and not a bad start.
