Had a funny moment at the Brighton Marina car boot sale when I suddenly found myself drawn towards brown things. I am not, by and large, a fan of the earth tones, and these indeed proved my point. The Karen Millen dress amply demonstrated that despite a general reputation for frumpiness, brown can be tarty (too tightly figure-hugging and cleavage-boosting, by design) though I do like its frill detail around the hem. On the other hand, the brown/cream striped Fenn Wright & Manson cardigan with ruffled front was a bit too ladies-who-Lewes, if you get what I mean (I’ve given it to Michi). Also unsuccessful: brown lurex-enhanced tie-front cardigan (too big, hung unflatteringly). However, in the same batch of items (£10 the lot, justifiable as it was all in good nick, and from higher-end High Street labels) came one keeper: a green Massimo Dutti vest, worn numerous times already.
