And finally, we have the new dining set installed. Only two chairs as yet – the pair I found in the street – but I’m on the lookout for another two, matching or not. The trestle table was a cast-off from our former next-door neighbour who has just left town; it’s smaller than the glass table I just sold, is solid enough to support a sewing machine, and has a pleasingly spartan feel to it. It’s almost ecclesiastical, with the altar cloth-like tablecloth and candlesticks, and the top echoes the woodgrain of the floor. I couldn’t have hoped to find anything more appropriate at any price – let alone conveniently donated. The Usual Shop will provide, as ever.
