Digging for victory

Why pay garden centre prices for big plant pots when you can use cheap plastic crates for growing vegetables? These deep blue packing crates (£10 for four, car boot sale in Shoreham) have had holes drilled in the bottom and are now planted out with broad beans, runner beans (plus wigwam of supporting bamboo canes) and spinach seedlings. OK, they’re not pretty – but then neither is the overgrown garden at the moment, and they will do the job. And they do at least nearly match the curtains in the shed.  Haven’t decided yet whether to use the red tub (50p) for an indoor cheese plant which needs repotting, or for potatoes.
