Problem with having a clear-out is that you end up rescuing half of it back again: these three dresses have been in a bag in the garage – the halfway house for my decluttering efforts – for about a year but I have ended up retrieving them. Rather faded black linen shift dress: $5 from a Salvation Army store in Grant’s Pass, Oregon, if I remember rightly, now hangs far better when worn with a belt (don’t know why I didn’t think of that last time round); long animal-print sheer shift (English jumble sale), same deal with a belt, looks less tarty when dressed down with black leggings and a cardigan (ditto on the reappraisal); Eighties rose-print black prom dress, souvenir from my first trip to San Francisco (sentimental value, from retro shop on Haight Street, the inevitable introduction to SF). All good arguments for never actually throwing anything out.
