Shine a light

There are people who spend £35 on little scented candles from the likes of Diptyche and Jo Malone, I’m told, and then there are people like me: scavengers that buy secondhand, slightly scuffed candles for 5p and 10p each at jumble sales. Well, these are only going to melt their wax in flower-beds or up the garden path, or give a bit of a glow to the plant-pots in the conservatory, and I very much doubt that designer candles would illuminate my garden any better of a summer’s evening. This batch came from Laughton Village Hall last weekend.
