Sewing machine

usual shop july 2009 007It’s the time of year when the students leave town and clear out their houses – and put piles of unwanted stuff out on the street. I have resisted temptation to try and rescue various withered plants, chairs which could be nicely painted-up, and large metal cooking pots which could house plants, but lugged this sewing machine (1950s ‘New Home’) up the hill on my way back from the pub the other night. It made sense at the time: I thought it might be useful to my granny for spare parts, even if it didn’t actually work. She has at least four sewing machines in varying stages of decrepitude and is impressively adept at fixing them.
