Seek and ye shall find: I firmly believe that everything I want will turn up at a jumble sale sooner or later, if I am only patient, sharp-eyed and lucky. My leather walking boots – $20 from a Walmart in rural Tennessee several years back – have sprung a leak, and I was about to take a deep breath and buy – gasp – a brand-new pair of lighter-weight neoprene-type boots for the summer. Then I found these, as-new and without even a trace of mud on their soles, for 50p at a jumble sale in Balcombe. They’re not hardcore enough to go scale mountains, but more than adequate for ambling round the South Downs.
The off-white plimsoles – and they are plimsoles and not American sneakers – for D were also 50p and unworn, complete with a ‘Made in England’ sticker. When were shoes like this last made in England? Surely a vintage pair.
